How to open a jumpring without going out of shape

Proper opening and closing of jumprings (metal rings) for jewelry etc.

It may sound like a pretty simple task to open and close metal jumprings, but the truth is that you risk losing your piece of jewelry if it is not done properly. This is why we want to show you how it is done best. This technique can be applied to small as well as large type jumprings.

To start with, we recommend that you get either one pointed and one flat-nosed pliers or, for slightly smaller jumprings, two pointed pliers.

Now, the necklace needs to be assembled and it should be done with a jumpring.

We recommend the use of flat-nose pliers and chain-nose pliers for the purpose. Hold the pliers parallel to each other with the opening of the jumpring in the middle at the top as shown in the picture. Hold the flat-nose pliers in the same position while you twist the chain-nose pliers gently forwards as shown below. If you do it this way, it will be easy to twist it back to close it later.

Turn it till you have just the opening that is needed for your purpose.

Pull the jumpring through the holes of the cord ends.

Then you close the jumpring again as far as possible in the same way as you opened it. The ends should face each other and meet so tightly that it gives a small click as they pass over each other.

Enjoy you work.
