How to Choose the Right Clasp for Your Jewellery Chain
There are several ways to attach a clasp to a chain to use it as a necklace. For anchor chains, which have oval, uniformly sized links, clasps can typically be mounted using jump rings. With ball chains, you can either use a connector that links the two ends together or opt for clasp heads with loops if you want to attach a lobster or other jewellery clasp.
Please note that some chains may be difficult to attach clasps to. In such cases, the only option is to glue the chain ends into end caps with loops.
Choose the Perfect Jewellery Chain for Your DIY Creations
A large part of the beauty of jewellery making lies in the chains that support the designs. There’s a wide variety of jewellery chains, each with its unique look and specific crafting techniques. Below is an overview of different jewellery chain types:
Anchor Chains: Classic chains with uniform oval and durable links. They’re strong and robust, often chosen for heavier pendants or as standalone chains. Many also use pieces of anchor chain when designing earrings, adding beautiful length and allowing beads to be wrapped around the chain. Jump rings and clasps are generally easy to attach to these chains.
Ball Chains: Featuring small spherical links, these chains have a smooth and consistent appearance. They’re versatile and pair well with various pendants. Ball chains are also popular for keyrings and straps in merchandise due to their easy opening and closing with ball chain connectors.
Figaro Chains: A combination of links in varying sizes creates a distinctive pattern, often with one larger link followed by several smaller ones. This adds character to the chain.
Venetian Chains: Known for their braided pattern, Venetian chains have a beautiful, intricate structure. These elegant chains offer a sophisticated look.
Curb Chains: With rectangular links, curb chains are bolder and create a striking impression. They’re ideal for carrying larger pendants.
Rolo Chains: These chains feature small round links woven together to create a wavy and organic structure. They’re flexible and provide a unique texture.
Snake Chains: With their shiny, scale-like appearance, snake chains are flexible and elegantly conform to the skin. They add a subtle elegance but are best finished by soldering the clasp, as there are no open links for attaching jump rings.
Design and technique play a vital role in the expression of each chain. While some chains have complex weaves and braids, others are more basic and uniform. The choice of chain can greatly impact the appearance and style of a piece of jewellery. Selecting the right chain to complement your jewellery’s character and purpose is an art in itself.
